Upcoming Workshops - March 17-19, 2011

Save the date!

The PEI Association of Planners, the Federation of PEI Municipalities and planningbureaumunicipal.ca

offer training sessions in Charlottetown, PEI:

PLANNING APPEALS, and
CONFLICT OF INTEREST & BIAS

Presented by:
Basile Chiasson, Q.C.
André Daigle, LL.M., MCIP, RPP

TRAINING SESSION #1 – Regulatory & Appeals Commission and land use planning (March 17-18, 2011)
Land use planning is an increasingly litigious environment.  Deep rooted in what motivates people to contest issues is their fundamental belief that they can do what they want with their land or prevent others from doing so.  Appeal boards have become a necessary mechanism to resolve such disputes that would otherwise overwhelm the courts or discriminate against individuals with limited means.  The session will provide a “hands on” understanding of preparing, arguing and appearing before the Island Regulatory & Appeals Commission.

TRAINING SESSION #2 – Conflicts of interest and bias (March 19, 2011)
Conflicts of interest and bias have their roots in fairness and natural justice principles.  These legal concepts ensure that municipal councilors and senior government officials operate within socially acceptable behaviors.  They are often used interchangeably but are quite distinct in their intents and impacts.
